Jewish Responsa: Ancient Answers to Modern Questions
Led by Rabbi Jennifer Frenkel
Three Wednesdays, February 3, 10 & 24, 10:30 am – noon
Responsa is the Jewish tradition of asking challenging questions and finding answers using Biblical and rabbinic texts. Responsa are among the oldest and most enduring forms of Jewish literature. We have records of tens of thousands of letters from rabbis answering questions posed to them. Unlike the commentaries and codes of Jewish law, these are immediate, practical questions facing the Jews of the time. It is a tradition that continues within each Jewish Movement today. Over the course of this 3-session class, we will look at a variety of contemporary questions about observance, ritual, medical ethics and personal responsibility. Together, we will study ancient texts and learn how they apply to our modern lives and how they can help us answer challenging modern, personal, legal, moral and ethical questions.
This class is open to all; registration required (click green button on this page).
There is no cost for congregants. $10/person per session for non-members.
Zoom information will be sent in advance to everyone who has registered.
